Why is weaving Language with Learning Content Areas beneficial for English Learners?

Most schools around the world teach different subjects in separate learning blocks. For example, Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, Music, Arts, etcetera are taught at different times.

English learners learn best when language learning is intertwined with the content they are reading. For instance, if they are learning about Ancient Egypt, they can make lists of things needed to embalm the body, learn vocabulary while reading the text, or draw pictures to show the different stages of the embalming process. Watering down the curriculum will not challenge students who probably have the knowledge in their first language and need time to transfer that to English.

Some other strategies such as pointing to cognates in both English and their native language make content more comprehensible. Using graphic organizers such as Venn Diagrams for compare/contrast or Plot Diagrams to plug in story elements can be less overwhelming for English Learners. Isolating grammar or vocabulary in teaching might not help students who are learning English as a new language. An interdisciplinary approach or an integrated curriculum would enhance understanding and make learning English more meaningful.
