Implication of Ethnicity on Learning

Does ethnicity affect students’ learning in any way? 

Ethnicity is a term that refers to a person’s language, religion, heritage, traditions, values, and customs. Students walk into a school with so many of these aspects that could be either accepted or ignored. These can be used to their advantage and enhance their performance or dampen their spirits as learners. 

A classroom can be a rainbow of ethnicities and a teacher can celebrate the colors in her room by incorporating them into the lessons. For  example, asking students what an object is called in their native language or which holidays are approaching can help students focus and feel important too.  Reaching out to parents to learn more about the ethnic values, beliefs, and traditions will help break the ice and complete the triangle of support to ensure success.
